Not a Nice Jewish Girl

Not long after I moved to London I started seeing stories on the covers of the evening papers about Amy Winehouse, a tatooed singer with a beehive hairdo. Drunk rock chicks are not a scarce commodity in London so I didn’t pay much attention. Or maybe I thought “Why is this news?” or “Who cares?” The Great British Public’s appetite for celebrity tittle tattle is bottomless, and preferably topless as well.
Amy who? Why did I not come across any reviews in the quality press? I suppose I wasn’t in the country. Here’s one.
Then, yesterday, I happened to come across her on a blog with a link to YouTube. OK, so tatoos and piercings and drugs and feckless drunkeness don’t appeal, but I clicked anyway to hear if she could sing. I was pleasantly surprised. This review, which I found later, says she is not a nice jewish girl. It’s true. But what a voice. They say she talks like a cab driver. I didn’t find the live recordings I listened to as good as these:
