Hitlerian Hissy Fit

An entertaining YouTube video: Adolf Hitler reacting badly to some soccer results. Actually, this is a work of comic genius — as good an advertisement for secondary use of original material as I’ve ever seen. I don’t know the ins and outs of the football story but you don’t have to. You don’t even need to know what former Liverpool manager, the famous Bill Shankly, said of the lovely game: “It is not a matter of life and death. It is much more important than that.”
Adolf’s (silent) home movies, shot by Eva Braun, were on TV recently with (roll the drums) unprecedented new information about what he said “in private” — thanks to revolutionary advances in computer-aided lip reading. Should you ever get a chance to see this, even without advertisements, go to the pub. In the end, the most interesting thing he said was that Goring at the dinner table provided evidence for the proposition that pigs are cannibals.
Will we ever know what was said in private at Camp David today between Gordon Brown (or Tony Brown as one US politician called him, revealingly, on BBC’s Newsnight program tonight) and George Bush. “Full and frank” according to Gordon, signaling his distance to voters at home. Mr.Bush was kind enough to note that Mr.Brown was “humourous” and not a “dour Scotsman,” signaling his relaxed relationship, but I wonder if he’d have been as happy if Gordon reported that “George is not a Texan cowboy”? Of course, he would never say that. It was interesting to the see the spinning afterwards and a little disappoining that an appearance on Newsnight by Henry Kissinger (by video link) fell through due to technical problems.
I happened to pick up a biography of Brown in a bookshop on the weekend and dipped into it at random. I didn’t buy it but it was an unexpectedly good read — intellectual fisticuffs about investments in health — that it’s something I’ll go back to before the next election. That shouldn’t be for some time yet, but with Labour enjoying a “Gordon bounce” in the opinion polls and the Conservative party beating itself up again very effectively, and suffering accordingly, there’s a chance of a snap election in the next few months.

Hi,
Here’s a link to the documentary on Hitler’s private life: http://www.jonhs.net/freemovies/hitlers_private_world.htm
Hope all is well there with the rains. Smart of you to buy an apartment up high…

Hah,
What do you know, that looks like the same program I watched (I can’t sit through it twice)! If so the bit about “chilling insights into Hitler’s private world” is oversold. “Apalling banality” would be more like it.
I’m not sure how far above sea level we’ll be if the Thames barrier goes, but if that happens London will be uninhabitable! Perhaps this should not be advertised?!
