Premium Mango Chutney

I will reveal later what Her Majesty received in addition to champagne and chocolate for her birthday, but this recent discovery is the gastronomic find of the month.
The number one shopper in the family inclines toward efficiency and frugality on weekly expeditions, whereas I like to try a few new things now and then. Supermarkets engage in all kinds of stunts to lure the seekers after novelty, most of whom are surely disappointed regularly. I know I am.
Things I haven’t had for years are occasionally seized on with joyous exclamation and turn out to be nothing like they used to be.
There are often free nibbles of various kinds waiting inside the door. Last week it was chocolates (good, but not good enough) and … cat food. Vouchers for cat food that is. I declined the latter on the grounds that it was an acquired taste I that hadn’t acquired.
But this one’s got swordfish, and this one has tuna…
the voucher man said. I shook my head. Really, the world’s oceans plundered for London’s feline epicures? Tsk. Let them eat mice! Why don’t they have mouse flavour cat food?
And to think that Samuel Johnson bought oysters for his cat Hodge, because that’s what cats and the poor ate in those days.
Anyway, the weekly search for a little luxurious novelty — catnip for people that is — came up trumps last week. I refer to the mango chutney above. Sublime is the word. Whole cardamoms and black peppers, fenugreek and more. I may try making my own. My all time favourite recipe involves quite a lot of mango chutney.

Mmm, mango chutney, not forgetting brinjal pickle, saag aloo, oh stop it, it’s lunch time and my boulangerie ony does ham and/or cheese sarnies. But it’s easier than using the coffee grinder to pulverise chick-peas, trying to make gram for onion bahjis (didn’t work). Last time back got my treasures spices confiscated by customs. Airport staff thought half a kilo each of cumin, coriander and chilli, not to mention 2 kilograms somewhat suspicious.
