Elonex has just announced the UK’s first £100 laptop. It will be available next week. Naturally, at this price, it runs Linux.

Back when IBM announced the PS/2 microchannel architecture to try to win back control of the PC market I struck it off the approved vendors list at a large company where I worked and replaced it with Elonex, then relatively unknown. I’m happy to see Elonex still alive and kicking, and pulling off a coup like this.

The Asus EEE PC was the first toll of the bell for Microsoft. This is the second.

I suspect the first version will have some minor issues. Either way, there’ll be another along soon. Lighter, with more memory and soon, please, running Ubuntu!

been meaning to mention… but forgot… had a technically savvy houseguest (friend starting when we were 8 or 9) with an Ubuntu computer. I just got my new Mac so… I thought I wasn’t in the market. But… while she was here my lovely little Thinkpad which had been on its last legs anyway… finally gave up the ghost entirely. So my idea to use it as my around-the-house web machine (she finally set me up with a wireless router, tho she had to call her son in Hawaii to complete the task… he said “is there a little hole in the top of the router… stick a paperclip in there”… she did and all worked perfectly)… my idea to use it as ’round the house (small apt — jeez are my legs broken?) machine and traveling machine are kaput. I will definitely get an ubuntu machine… it was fantastic… all the software you want for free download and off you go.
