We Are Together
Aug 3rd, 2008 by Eats Wombats
Last night, by chance, we watched one of the most powerful programmes I’ve ever seen on television. It was billed in the Sunday Times as
7:30 We Are Together Two first time film-makers tell the story of a South African orphanage’s children’s choir that is trying to get to London for a series of concerts.
This doesn’t sound promising. Happily, it was introduced with the words “an extraordinary and moving story” by ITN journalist Jon Snow. I confused Snow, who I later discovered had worked as a volunteer in Uganda for a year, with Michael Nicholson, an ITN colleague who adopted an orphaned young girl in Bosnia (and wrote a book about it), and so decided to watch for a few minutes.
An hour and 50 minutes later (with advertising breaks) I hadn’t just been moved, I was emotionally transported. I tried to visit the web site afterwards but it was down; I hope that meant many others had had the same idea (it’s ok now). The Telegraph has a review of the film, and there’s some background about how it was made here on Annie Lennox’s blog.
If you get a chance to see it do not miss this.
