It seems that Samsung will be the first to upsize a netbook to a mini laptop with a decent keyboard while retaining many of the advantages of the netbook. The Samsung NC20 looks very nice indeed (more here). I’ll wait a bit longer for something similar with Wireless-N built in, maybe even WiMax.
Uh oh, there will also be an Asus EEE PC S121. So that’s a trend then. Good!
I could imagine changing laptop as often as some people change phones, but not just yet. A new phone and a camera are higher up the gadget replacement list, but I don’t feel in any great hurry. Mr. Jobs may tip his hand in the next month or so, as will Palm and others. But, looking ahead, a €500 a year tax with the old device going to one of the 75% of the world’s population not online… why not?
Here’s an interesting story: Google’s Android operating system for the gphone can run on an Asus 1000 netbook PC. VentureBeat predicts Android on netbooks by next year (the comments are worth a scan).
It’s hardly a serious threat to Microsoft so much as yet another crack in the monolith — along with the recent fall in Internet Explorer’s market share, now below 70%. It’s going to take a good cloud strategy for Microsoft to stop the slide. ThinkgOS‘s Cloud is another crack. Ubuntu running on ARM processors will be another very shortly.
I’ve used my Asus EEE 1000 PC as a phone lately, with SkypeOut, and it works well. How long before I can choose whether to take a call on my phone or, with video, on a netbook? Perhaps I can already? –but only Skype calls.
A linux powered netbook with WiMax and 3G included will go on sale this in month in the Philippines, a cut throat market with low margins. Halo halo!
