I finally got around to reading Andrew Sullivan’s cover story in the last issue of The Atlantic Monthly, a letter to President Bush: Dear Mr. President.

Sullivan sets out the case for Bush taking responsibility for America’s use of torture. It’s probably the finest essay I’ve read this year. The fact that he was a supporter of Bush, a conservative, and in favour invading Iraq should make it all the more compelling — even though humanity alone should be sufficient.

Will Bush read it? Is he even capable of taking it in?

Even if he is, and I have seen suggestions that he’s far gone on anti-depressants, I am not optimistic that he will respond as Sullivan feels he should.

Sullivan is afraid that the Republicans will get back into office someday and that torture will be back on the agenda.

John Farrell’s article on why white working class voters can’t save the Republicans now suggested otherwise. Unless Afghanistan becomes another Vietnam and the economy tanks…
