Rainy Afternoon Shopping

Two middle aged men with long grey locks at the next table were studying their phones. One of them began to read out some text messages and suddenly I had a déjà vuexperience.

First, the flashback. I am sitting in cybercafe on Mindoro. Beside me are two young girls who could be teenagers but are probably older. They are chatting with men on the Internet. One of them is regaling the other with snippets from email. Every so often hands fly to their mouths and they sqeal like schoolgirls. Clearly these men, who are sending money, are not just suckers, but laughable suckers.

London Pubs Dying

I have just been to my local pub for the last time.
The public house is an institution in the British Isles. Alas, it’s one that is dying. Earlier this year The Telegraph reported that 6 pubs a day were closing due to the economic downturn. More recently I’ve seen a figure of 50 a week.

Daunt Books for Travellers

Marylebone High Street is about 5 minutes walk from my home. One of its attractions is Daunt’s bookshop.
It’s a very good travel bookshop and it can be a dangerous place to visit if you are a booklover. You can get a feeling of wellbeing just by walking in and savouring the atmosphere.
